Dear Kindergarten Families,
This month our curriculum integration is all about time and weather. This week in science we learned about the seasons, then tied this learning in with math and started our unit on time, discussing the months of the year, days of the week, and sequencing events. This learning was also tied in with our Writing Workshop with a focus on sequencing events in our stories. Next week we'll start our unit on telling time! Questions: What are seasons like in different parts of our country? What are the characteristics of winter in our community? What are different types of weather? How does a thermometer work? This month we will: Identify the seasons of the year. Identify the characteristics of winter in our community. Identify aspects of weather; temperature, wind, precipitation, storms. Describe observable changes in weather. Give examples of how weather affects people’s daily activities in our community and around our country. Use technology to identify weather around the U.S. and the world. Understand and become familiar with author Leo Lionni by participating in an author study. Write and illustrate stories with sequence, having a clear beginning, middle, and ending. Compare characters and events from different stories. Share opinions about a Leo Lionni book. Identify concepts of print. Spell words families short a words and participate in spelling assessments. Identify phonics sounds: /sh/, /ch/, /th/, and /wh/. Read beginning blend sounds such as /fl/. Read and write sight words: ate, come have, eat, ride, yes, no, at, but, yet, black, brown, white, green, will, well, soon, good. Write a sentence to tell about a weather topic. Write two sentences that go together. Practice writing the correct formation of letters. Understand concepts of time; year, week, day, sequence of events, and tell time on a clock to the hour. Record and share data from weather/science investigations. Count to 95! The following items I am in need of for our classroom.
